Temporary road closure

ITANAGAR, May 17: The road from Gohpur Tinali, Itanagar to State Zoo tri-junction shall remain closed to vehicular traffic tomorrow from 7 am to 2 pm due to urgent repair work of Dokioso Bailey Bridge along the said road. This was informed by the EE, Doimukh Division, PWD.

Sanjoy accepts defeat

ITANAGAR, May 17: INC Western Parliamentary candidate Takam Sanjoy with all humility today accepted the verdict of the people in favour of BJP candidate Kiren Rijiju, who has won with a thumping majority.

"I have urged Kiren to take care of all sections of the people of the constituency and the greater causes of the state as the BJP has won the mandate to rule the country for the next five years," Sanjoy said in a press statement.

While extending his best wishes to Kiren, Sanjoy expressed his gratitude to the people for all their support, saying: "I did my best in the greater interest of the people and the state.

Tea garden owned by former minister damaged

ITANAGAR, May 17: Former minister Lichi Legi today claimed that miscreants ransacked Roni tea estate located at Karisnga owned by his family on Friday night without any provocation. In a press release he stated, "Last night some petty miscreants having affiliation with people of similar petty mentality did a cowardly act under the garb of darkness by ransacking Roni Tea Estate. If somebody has any grievances with me, he or she should directly address to me. But such an act is surely not becoming of a person with proper bearing. This only shows the stone age mentality of the people involved in this spineless act."

He further added, "Keeping in view that this is election time, it is even more serious. Being a responsible citizen of the state, I restrained myself to legal and lawful recourse only." Legi also appealed to the law enforcing agency of state to give exemplary punishment to the conspirators of this dastardly act so that they refrain from any such act in future.

ASSU seeks arrest of all accused

ITANAGAR, May 17: The All Sagalee Students' Union (ASSU) has sought arrest of all accused involved in the alleged murder case of a 16-year-old girl in Sagalee. Sagalee police on May 14 last had recovered the remains of the girl near her rented house in Sagalee, more than three months, after she went missing on January 31 earlier this year.

In its letter to the Papum Pare DC, informing that the alleged main culprit was behind bars in District Jail Jully, it threatened to launch democratic movement if the demand is not fulfilled, saying that it was a clear case of gang rape.

2 ministers, many Parl. Secretaries bite the dust

ITANAGAR, May 17: Though ruling Congress party has retained power with absolute majority to form the government two ministers, many parliamentary secretaries and veteran party leaders bit the dust in the assembly election, the results of which were declared yesterday.

Two ministers, who lost the battle of ballots, are Agriculture, Horticulture and Dairy Development Minister Setong Sena (Nampong) and Education Minister Bosiram (Pasighat East).

While Siram was a Cabinet Minister for the last two terms, Sena remained minister for the last three consecutive terms.

Sena lost to his own personal assistant Laisam Simai by 203 votes, while Bosiram surrendered to BJP first timer Kaling Moyong by a slender margin of 50 votes.

Another veteran party leader, who lost this election, is former Home Minister and sitting MLA from Nari Koyu constituency Tako Dabi.

He was defeated by another first timer BJP nominee Kento Rina by a margin of 389 votes.

"My defeat was mainly due to anti-incumbency and the people did not want me to continue for several terms. I gracefully accept the mandate of the people," Dabi said.

A total of 12 parliamentary secretaries of the outgoing government also tasted defeat in the hands of BJP, Peoples' Party of Arunachal (PPA) and independents as well.

Among the prominent include, Tsewang Dhondup (Art & Culture), RT Khunjuju (Hydropower), Padi Richo (Land management), Lokam Tassar (Tax & Excise), Nido Pavitra (Health), Takar Marde (deputy chairman of state planning board), Gadam Ete (Home), J K Panggeng (Law), Karikho Kri (PHED), C C Singpho (Finance), Tinghaap Taiju (WRD) and Yumsum Matey (Social Welfare). Party's MLA Kamthok Lowang was also defeated from Khonsa East constituency by Wanglam Sawin of the PPA.

The most surprising result in this election was the defeat of PPA's Chief Ministerial candidate Laeta Umbrey from Roing constituency in Lower Dibang Valley district.

Umbrey was defeated by Muchu Mithi of Congress by a margin of 2185 votes.

From the opposition BJP, two sitting MLAs Tapen Siga (Daporijo) and Dr Tangor Tapak (Pasighat West) lost, while former chief minister Gegong Apang lost to Alo Libang of the Congress from Tuting-Yingkiong seat for the second time in a row.

19 newcomers win

A total of 19 newcomers, who tried their luck, tasted victory in the assembly elections.

While most of them are from Gen Next, nine of them represent BJP, five Congress, three PPA and two Independents.

The state has a legacy of electing first timers.

In 2004 assembly elections altogether 24 new faces were elected while during 2009 polls, only 17 new entrants tasted luck.

In this election, BJP first time winners included Kento Rina (Nari-Koyu), Laisam Simai (Nampong), Olom Panyang (Meriyang Geku), Tage Taki from Ziro-Hapoli constituency, Tamar Murtem from Raga constituency who defeated health & parliamentary secretary Nido Pavitra, Tumke Bagra (Along West) defeated parliamentary secretary (Home) Gadam Ete, Kaling Moyong who won from Pasighat East defeating Education Minister Bosiram Siram.

Other new faces of the party include Dr Mahesh Chai (Tezu) who defeated Parliamentary secretary (PHE) Karikho Kri and Tesan Pongte from Changlang North constituency who overpowered parliamentary secretary for water resources department Tinghaap Taiju.

While Rina is a retired government official (DDSE), Simai who was the personal assistant of Agriculture Minister Setong Sena defeated his boss.

Panyang is a prominent BJP leader of the area while Taki was an engineer with the state PWD who took voluntary retirement to contest the poll.

Murtem is a prominent leader of the party from the area.

Tumke Bagra and Kaling Moyong are popular leaders from their respective districts, while Mahesh Chai was a doctor by profession and Pongte is a popular leader from insurgency- hit Changlang district.

Among the first entrants in Congress, Muchu Mithi (Roing), an entrepreneur is the eldest son of Rajya Sabha MP and Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President Mukut Mithi, while Dikto Yekar (Daporijo) is a youth Congress leader.

Zinglu Namchoom, who won from Namsai constituency, is a prominent youth leader of the area.

Another new face of the party, Tatung Jamoh who won from Pasighat West defeating sitting BJP MLA Dr Tangor Tapak, is another youth leader of the area.

Mama Natung from Congress, who is also a first timer won from Seppa West unopposed.

Interestingly, Kameng Dolo (Congress) former deputy chief minister won from Pakke Kessang seventh time in his eight attempts. Dolo won unopposed this time.

PPA candidate Wanglam Sawin (Khonsa East) is a popular leader of the area, while Tirong Aboh (Khonsa West) is an equally popular leader of the party.

Another giant killer of the party is Pani Taram from Koloriang who defeated parliamentary secretary for tax & excise Lokam Tassar.

Independent candidate Tsering Tashi who won from Tawang constituency, is the district Congress president and son of former Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu.

Another independent Paknga Bage who won from Dumporijo is a popular figure of the constituency.

2 women win Assembly polls -- sub headline

In a state where women voters outnumber males, only two women could make it to the 60-member Assembly from among the total seven who had contested this time.

The two winning candidates Karya Bagang (Chayangtajo) and Gum Tayeng (Dambuk) are from the ruling Congress.

Both won the seats for the second term.

While Bagang polled 4343 votes (74.8 per cent), Tayeng secured 5473 votes(55.3 per cent).

Women who lost the hustling include Toko Sheetal of PPA from Itanagar constituency, Debia Tara (BJP) and Taba Nirmali from Yachuli, NPF candidate Pike Pulu from Lekang and Independent Yai Mara from Likabali. Mara had unsuccessfully contested from the constituency in 2009.

Mara and Nirmali occupied the second place this time polling 2972 votes (34.7 per cent) and 6615 votes (47.7 per cent) respectively in their constituencies.

Tara polled only 569 votes (4.1 per cent), followed by Sheetal who got 418 votes (1.2 per cent) and Pulu with 236 votes (1.8 per cent) respectively.

The state has 3,77,272 female voters against 3,75,898 males, with women outnumbering men in several assembly constituencies.

Sibo Kai was the first woman legislator of the state after she was nominated to the assembly in 1978 when the state was a Union Territory and Nyari Welly was the first elected MLA of the state.

Welly was first elected from Seppa constituency on a PPA ticket in 1980 and re-elected in 1984 from the same constituency as a Congress candidate.

Independent candidate Komoli was elected from Nampong constituency in 1984 and re-elected from the same constituency as a Congress nominee in 1990. O M Deori was also elected from Lekang in the same year.

The other women MLAs of the state include Yadap Apang (Congress) who won from Pasighat in 1995, Mekup Dolo (1999) as an independent candidate from Seppa, Congress candidate Niani Natung from Pakke-Kessang during 2001 by election, Yari Dulom from Daporijo during 2002 by- poll and independent candidate Nang Sati Mein from Namsai during 2009. Former minister T G Rinpoche passes away

ITANAGAR, May 17: One of the greatest Dharma Guru of the Gelugpa Sect of the Himalayan Buddhism, His Eminence the 13th Tsona Gontse Rinpoche, better known as TG Rinpoche, left for his heavenly abode at New Delhi on 16th May. His untimely demise filled his millions of devotees in India and abroad with deep sorrow and grief. He was recognized as reincarnation of Lama Thupten Jampal Wangchuk by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, reports DIPRO, Bomdila.

Late TG Rinpoche was born on 19th August 1967 at Nesar Zhungpatse, Shyro village in Tawang. He started his education at Drepung Loseling Monastery, South India. A doctorate in Buddhist Philosophy, T G Rinpoche served as President of the Himalayan Buddhist Culture Association, New Delhi and worked towards the development of mutual relationships between various cultures and religions of India and endeavoured towards preservation of flora and fauna to maintain a peaceful environment of co-existence of all sentient beings. He was the Minister of State, Industry, Textile and Handicrafts and Cabinet Minister of Tourism, Chairman of Advisory Council for Tourism Development (ACTD), Chairman, Arunachal Pradesh Hydropower Development Corporation, (APHPDC), Govt. of Arunachal Pradesh during his different tenures respectively. He held the position of Chairman, Department of Karmik & Adhyatmik (Chos-rig) Affairs, Govt. of Arunachal Pradesh before he left for the heavenly abode. He assumed the great responsibilities of developing the religious shrines and cultural practices and activities in the Mon region. Numerous monasteries, educational centres, stupas and cottage industries established by him are testimonies of his accomplishments. His noble efforts in providing education to destitute, giving shelter and food to homeless and old age, providing free education and upbringing to orphans received global accolades. He got international recognition as an excellent social worker and fully accomplished spiritual master. He received several national and international awards for his tireless efforts and social works for the well being of people around the world. He became the first ever Buddhist representative from the entire Himalayan region to attend the Millennium Union Nation World Peace Summit at the United Nations Assembly Hall.

With his untimely demise, a pall of gloom has descended over the whole of Mon area. People still find it hard to believe. But they take satisfaction and recourse in the hope and belief that, he would soon reincarnate to lead them on the righteous path and from darkness unto light & to carry on the good deeds for the welfare of the people.

His mortal remains would be flown from Delhi to Bomdila on 18th escorted by Pema Khandu and Phurpa Tsering; both MLAs. The mortal remains would be kept at Gontse Gaden Rabgyeling Monastery, Upper Gompa for a week or so in order to facilitate the hundreds and thousands of devotees to pay their homage and bid adieu.

A meeting of all the HODs and representatives of the Buddhist Culture Preservation Society(BCPS), Mon Bomdila was called this afternoon by DC AK Singh to finalize the whole process and to render every possible help from the district administration and police.

Guv, CM mourn demise of Rinpoche

ITANAGAR, May 17: Arunachal Pradesh Governor Lt Gen (Retd) Nirbhay Sharma and Chief Minister Nabam Tuki today expressed shock and grieved the sudden demise of former minister and respected spiritual leader TG Rinpoche in New Delhi yesterday.

In his condolence message, the Governor said that Late Rinpoche made immense contribution towards the State and Nation in various capacities as an able minister and as a social worker in the field of tourism, hydropower and social welfare. The people of State and well-wishers all over the world will always remember Rev Rinpoche for his noble initiatives and works of compassion for orphans and persistent endeavour towards preservation and promotion of Buddhism, the Governor added.

Joining the people of Arunachal Pradesh, the Governor extended solidarity with the Buddhist Community of the State and entire Himalayan region and prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul.

Expressing his profound sorrow over the unfortunate and sudden demise of former Minister T G Rinpoche, Nabam Tuki in his condolence message said, "the news of sudden and unfortunate demise of His Eminence Jetsun Tenzin Jampal Wangchuk, popularly known as Tsona Gontse Rinpoche on May 16, 2014 at Delhi has come as a shock to me. While the entire state of Arunachal Pradesh had just emerged from the month long hustle bustle of Assembly and Parliamentary elections, this news has descended with a pall of gloom in the entire state".

"Rev. T G Rinpoche will be remembered forever by the people of this state, the country and the world for his contributions as a spiritual guru, a social worker, an able minister and a seasoned legislator" CM added while praying for the eternal peace of the departed soul.

In his condolence message, former Chief Minister Jarbom Gamlin said, "I am stunned by the news of the untimely death of Rinpoche. It is not just a sad moment for the Buddhist community, but a severe loss for all of us in the State."

"In this hour of grief my condolences are with all his bereaved followers and I pray to the Almighty to give them the strength to bear the irreparable pain."

While paying tribute to Rimpoche, Gamlin remembered him as a greatly admired religious leader and an exceptionally compassionate soul and said that his contributions in the establishment of the respected Central Institute of Himalayan Culture Studies (CIHCS), the renovation of the historical Gorsam Stupa at Zemithang and the new infrastructure at the Gontse Gaden Rabgye-ling Monastery will be remembered for eternity.

"I will always remember him for his positive outlook to life and honour him as an exceptional scholar and spiritual master of the highest eminence. I feel a deep personal loss at his demise", Gamlin said.

The Indigenous Faith and Cultural Society of Arunachal Pradesh (IFCSAP) along with its district unit members have expressed profound grief and sorrow over sudden demise of Rinphoche.

"He was a great religious 'Guru', philanthropist and seasoned politician. His religious activities were not only confined to Arunachal Pradesh but spread to whole of the country and South-East Asia" IFCSAP said in a condolence message.

His death is a great loss not only to the Buddhist community but also entire indigenous people of the state, the message said, adding that the vacuum created by his death will be difficult to fill.

"May almighty rest his departed soul in eternal peace," the condolence message said.

"Rimpoche was a man of great honour. In his death the Buddhist community has lost a great leader and soul," said Chairman of Theravada Buddhist Society (TBS), Itanagar CM Moungmaw.

While joining people of the state in condoling the death of Rinpoche, TBS members, in a condolence meeting observed two minutes silence as mark of respect to late Rinpoche and prayed to almighty to rest his departed soul in peace.

My victory is people's victory, says Rijiju

ITANAGAR, May 17: BJP candidate from Arunachal Western Parliamentary constituency Kiren Rijiju who emerged victorious with thumping majority in Parliamentary elections today credited his victory to the people of Arunachal Pradesh. "This victory is not my victory, but the victory of the people of Arunachal Pradesh" Rijiju said while acknowledging the people's mandate in favour of him. He was addressing the mediapersons along with State BJP president and general secretary Tai Tagak and Dominic Tadar at party office here this evening after came from Aalo. Rijiju made spectacular come back after defeating INC candidate Takam Sanjoy with thumping margin of 41738 votes from the Western Parliamentary seat.

"I am grateful and overwhelmed by the people' love, support and faith reposed in me" he said. Kiren asserted that he would not ever let down the people of Arunachal as long as he is MP in the Parliament. He further termed his victory as a verdict of people against underperformed Congress leader in the Parliament. Terming his victory as new beginning in Arunachal in terms of people consciousness in democracy, he said that people this time chose to vote against corrupt system and money power. He also said that with his comeback in Parliament from Arunachal Western Parliamentary constituency people has outrightly rejected temptation of money power being used by Congress party during the election.

Rijiju exuded hope that under the leadership of Narendra Modi the new chapter of development in Arunachal will begin and the issues of the state would be looked into. He assured that he would continue his journey to fulfill the unfinished tasks which he left five years ago in the Parliament for development of Arunachal. "I will be as vocal as I used to be, no matter I am in the ruling party when it comes to Arunachal and Northeast issue" Rijiju asserted.

On stapled visa, BJP MP assured that he would impress upon Prime Minister-designate Narendra Modi to deal with China diplomatically to solve the stapled visa issue. He also said strict mechanism would be initiated soon to tackle influx in the Northeast states. "If their presence is threat to our existence, then they must go back" he said while referring to the reported influx of illegal immigrants in Northeast from a neighbouring country.

Kiren divulged that he would give priority on good and corruption-free governance, development in every aspect, public awareness on work culture during his tenure.

Earlier, Rijiju was accorded rousing welcome by thousands of his supporters and the party activists.

Ering re-elected, assures to complete all pending works

ITANAGAR, May 17: INC candidate from Eastern Parliament seat and Union minister of state for minority affairs Ninong Ering has won the parliamentary election by defeating BJP's Tapir Gao by a margin of 12478 votes in a triangular contest, according to ECI source.

Meanwhile, soon after being re-elected as MP Ninong Ering visited Lower Dibang Valley and thanked the electorates and his supporters for giving him a strong mandate in the Lok Sabha election, an official release said.

"I am back here in Roing, as I had promised before the election," said the parliamentarian and promised to implement all the pending MPLAD schemes.

The parliamentarian said that the people of the district have turned the tide of 'Modi wave' that had swept across the country by electing a Congress representative for Parliament and State Assembly.

Soon after his meeting with supporters at Roing, he visited Deopani (Eze) river Bailey bridge point to take stock of the damages caused due to torrential rain.

The hills area of Lower Dibang Valley remained cut off with Roing for more than two weeks due to the damage. As temporary measure for the commuters, Ering announced Rs 2 lakhs from his MPLAD for construction of temporary foot suspension bridge over river Deopani. He also announced a flood protection scheme of Rs 2 lakhs for Ephi Pani river on the Roing-Hunli road.

Further, he announced Rs 30 lakhs for flood protection schemes across Roing constituency. This announcement was made after inspection of flood prone areas of Cheta-II, Kabang, Abali, and Iduli village. The funds for all the schemes announced are being disbursed from MPLAD fund of the financial year 2013-14.

On water related projects, he announced irrigation channels for Abango, Injuno and Iduli of Rs 2 lakhs each. A water tank for Arungo, Koronu and Rukmo of Rs 2 lakhs each was also announced.

Later in the day, Ering visited Abali government middle school, and announced Rs 5 lakhs for construction of school building. Beside, a community Rehko hall for Denlo village for Rs 3 lakhs was also announced.

During his visit, Ering met the newly elected Congress MLAs from Roing constituency Mutchu Mithi at his residence and Gum Tayeng of Dambuk.

Along with Mutchu, Panchayat leaders of the district, including Zilla Parishad Chairperson Sipi Elapra and DCC president Chiliko Meto and host of dignitaries, senior leaders, and youth workers accompanied Ering during the tour to villages.

Tuki thanks voters, assures to fulfill poll promises

ITANAGAR, May 17: Chief Minister Nabam Tuki today expressed gratefulness to the people of the State for reinstating their faith on the people-friendly government of the Congress by giving it the mandate with an overwhelming majority in the just concluded Assembly elections.

"People have reposed their faith on the Congress Government by electing 42 INC candidates, including eleven unopposed, to the 60-member Legislative Assembly. This is an overwhelming majority and is the result of our developmental and pro-people activities in recent years," he said in a statement this morning.

Tuki attributed the election success to the novel and ambitious programs and schemes launched by the Congress Government over the years for development of the state and welfare of its people.

"Everything we did and achieved were placed before the electorates for themselves to judge and vote. We also placed our vision for the future through our election manifesto, which the people accepted wholeheartedly and therefore, placed their confidence on us," he said and assured that every promise made in the manifesto will be fulfilled in the next five years. Tuki, who had won his assembly seat from Sagalee unopposed, reiterated that with the election process complete, it was now time to work together in interest of the state irrespective of party affiliations and offices.

"The people have done their duty. Now it is our turn - every elected representative - to fulfill our duty towards the people. Let us now put aside our differences and work in tandem for overall development of the state and welfare of our people," he appealed.

Meanwhile, Tuki congratulated all the elected representatives and gracefully accepted the verdict given by the people, where the Congress faltered.

"People have chosen their own representatives. The power is ultimately in their hands. I humbly accept their verdict and congratulate the winning candidates of all the parties and look forward to their cooperation in taking Arunachal Pradesh on the path of accelerated development on all fronts," he added.

Tuki also congratulated the two Lok Sabha members elected by the people from Arunachal East and Arunachal West Parliamentary constituencies.
